The Raising of Lazarus

11A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha.G1161G5100G2258G770G2976G575G963G1537G2968G3137G2532G846G79G31362This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord's feet and wiped them with her hairc. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick.G1161G2258G3137G3588G218G2962G3464G2532G1591G846G4228G846G2359G3739G80G2976G7703So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, "Lord, your dear friend is very sick."G3767G79G649G4314G846G3004G2962G2396G3739G5368G7704But when Jesus heard about it he said, "Lazarus's sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this."G1161G2424G191G2036G3778G769G2076G3756G4314G2288G235G5228G1391G2316G2443G5207G2316G1392G1223G8465So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus,G1161G2424G25G3136G2532G846G79G2532G29766he stayed where he was for the next two days.G5613G191G3767G3754G770G3306G1417G2250G5119G3303G1722G5117G3739G22587Finally, he said to his disciples, "Let's go back to Judea."G1899G3326G5124G3004G3101G71G1519G2449G38258But his disciples objected. "Rabbi," they said, "only a few days ago the peoplec in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?"G3101G3004G846G4461G2453G3568G2212G3034G4571G2532G5217G1563G38259Jesus replied, "There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.G2424G611G1526G3780G1427G5610G2250G1437G5100G4043G1722G2250G4350G3756G3754G991G5457G5127G288910But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light."G1161G1437G5100G4043G1722G3571G4350G3754G2076G3756G5457G1722G84611Then he said, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up."G5023G2036G846G2532G3326G5124G3004G846G2257G5384G2976G2837G235G4198G2443G1852G846G185212The disciples said, "Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!"G3767G2036G846G3101G2962G1487G2837G498213They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.G1161G2424G2046G4012G846G2288G1161G1565G1380G3754G3004G4012G2838G525814So he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead.G5119G3767G2036G2424G846G3954G2976G59915And for your sakes, I'm glad I wasn't there, for now you will really believe. Come, let's go see him."G2532G5463G1223G5209G3754G2252G2258G3756G1563G2443G4100G235G71G4314G84616Thomas, nicknamed the Twinc, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too—and die with Jesus."G3767G2036G2381G3588G3004G1324G4827G71G2532G71G2443G2249G599G3326G84617When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.G3767G2424G2064G2147G846G2192G1722G3419G5064G2250G223518Bethany was only a few milesc down the road from Jerusalem,G1161G963G2258G1451G2414G5613G1178G4712G57519and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss.G2532G4183G1537G2453G2064G4314G3136G2532G3137G4012G2443G3888G846G4012G846G8020When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house.G3767G3136G5613G191G3754G2424G2064G5221G846G1161G3137G2516G1722G362421Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.G3767G2036G3136G4314G2424G2962G1487G2258G5602G3450G80G302G2348G3756G234822But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask."G235G1492G2532G3568G3754G3745G302G154G2316G2316G1325G467123Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again."G2424G3004G846G4675G80G45024"Yes," Martha said, "he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day."G3136G3004G846G1492G3754G450G1722G386G1722G2078G225025Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the lifec. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.G2424G2036G846G1473G1510G386G2532G2222G4100G1519G1691G2579G599G219826Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?"G2532G3956G2198G2532G4100G1519G1691G599G3364G1519G165G599G4100G512427"Yes, Lord," she told him. "I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God."G3004G846G3483G2962G1473G4100G3754G4771G1488G5547G5207G2316G3588G2064G1519G288928Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, "The Teacher is here and wants to see you."G2532G2036G5023G2036G565G2532G5455G3137G846G79G2977G2036G1320G3918G2532G5455G457129So Mary immediately went to him.G5613G1565G191G1453G5035G2532G2064G4314G84630Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him.G1161G2424G2064G3768G2064G1519G2968G235G2258G1722G5117G3699G3136G5221G84631When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus's grave to weep. So they followed her there.G2453G3767G3588G5607G3326G846G1722G3614G2532G3888G846G1492G3137G3754G450G5030G2532G1831G190G846G3004G3754G5217G1519G3419G2443G2799G156332When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died."G3767G5613G3137G2064G3699G2424G2258G1492G846G4098G1519G846G4228G3004G846G2962G1487G2258G5602G3450G80G302G3756G59933When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within himc, and he was deeply troubled.G5613G2424G3767G1492G846G2799G2532G2453G2799G4905G846G1690G4151G2532G5015G143834"Where have you put him?" he asked them. They told him, "Lord, come and see."G2532G2036G4226G5087G846G3004G846G2962G2064G2532G149235Then Jesus wept.G2424G114536The people who were standing nearby said, "See how much he loved him!"G3767G3004G2453G2396G4459G5368G84637But some said, "This man healed a blind man. Couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?"G1161G5100G1537G846G2036G1410G3756G3778G3588G455G3788G5185G4160G2443G2532G3778G599G3361G59938Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.G2424G3767G3825G1690G1722G1438G2064G1519G3419G1161G2258G4693G2532G3037G1945G1909G84639"Roll the stone aside," Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man's sister, protested, "Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible."G2424G3004G142G3037G3136G79G2348G3004G846G2962G2235G3605G1063G2076G506640Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that you would see God's glory if you believe?"G2424G3004G846G2036G3756G4671G3754G1437G4100G3700G1391G231641So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, "Father, thank you for hearing me.G3767G142G3037G3757G2348G2258G2749G1161G2424G142G507G3788G2532G2036G3962G2168G4671G3754G191G345042You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me."G1161G1473G1492G3754G191G3450G3842G235G1223G3793G3588G4026G2036G2443G4100G3754G4771G649G316543Then Jesus shouted, "Lazarus, come out!"G2532G5023G2036G2905G3173G5456G2976G1204G185444And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, "Unwrap him and let him go!"G2532G2348G1831G1210G5495G2532G4228G2750G2532G846G3799G4019G4676G2424G3004G846G3089G846G2532G863G5217

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.G3767G4183G1537G2453G3588G2064G4314G3137G2532G2300G3739G2424G4160G4100G1519G84646But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.G1161G5100G1537G846G565G4314G5330G2532G2036G846G3739G2424G416047Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high councilc together. "What are we going to do?" they asked each other. "This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.G3767G4863G749G2532G5330G4892G2532G3004G5101G4160G3754G3778G444G4160G4183G459248If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Templec and our nation."G1437G863G846G3779G863G3956G4100G1519G846G2532G4514G2064G2532G142G2532G2257G5117G2532G148449Caiaphas, who was high priest at that timec, said, "You don't know what you're talking about!G1161G1520G5100G1537G846G2533G5607G749G1565G1763G2036G846G5210G1492G3756G376250You don't realize that it's better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed."G3761G1260G3754G4851G2254G2443G1520G444G599G5228G2992G2532G3650G1484G622G336151He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation.G1161G5124G2036G3756G575G1438G235G5607G749G1565G1763G4395G3754G2424G3195G599G5228G148452And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.G2532G3756G5228G1484G3440G235G2443G2532G4863G1519G1520G5043G2316G128753So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus' death.G3767G575G1565G2250G4823G2443G615G846G61554As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.G2424G3767G4043G3765G3954G1722G2453G235G565G1564G1519G5561G1451G2048G1519G4172G3004G2187G2546G1304G3326G846G310155It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began.G1161G2453G3957G2258G1451G2532G4183G305G1537G5561G1519G2414G4253G3957G2443G48G143856They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, "What do you think? He won't come for Passover, will he?"G3767G2212G2424G2532G3004G3326G240G2476G1722G2411G5101G1380G5213G3754G2064G3364G2064G1519G185957Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.G1161G2532G749G2532G5330G1325G1785G2443G1437G5100G1097G4226G2076G3377G3704G4084G846
